Material: 100% Highland wool – Bolivia
Sourced from highland sheep that graze alongside llamas in the Bolivian highlands. This wool is a unique fibre with a naturally crimped texture and exceptional elasticity, making the material durable and helping it maintain its shape over time. Its gentle, neutral off-white hue, a result of the sheep’s natural colouring, adds a distinct sense of lightness and purity to the material.Colours starting with 'pure' are undyed and unbleached, allowing the natural colour of the fibre to remain unchanged – offered entirely as found in nature, with every variation in tone and perfect imperfection this entails. The wool is sourced and refined locally at a factory in Bolivia, with which we have worked closely since aiayu’s beginnings over 20 years ago. The factory manages all stages of production – from fibre sorting, cleaning, carding, and spinning to the finished, knitted product. The llamas roam and graze freely in large herds in the Bolivian highlands. Our aim is to preserve and support the traditional craftsmanship in Bolivia's handknitting communities. We knit everything traditionally and finish every product by hand to minimize waste. Our handknitted items are individual works of art ‘signed’ with initials from the Bolivian woman who knitted them. The factory in Bolivia handles all production processes from fiber sorting, washing, carding, spinning and handknitting of the final garment. The factory cleans and reuses its wastewater and runs solely on renewable energy.
